Angel Court Angel Court is a rare and unique collection of retro revamped vintage jewelry and art. Nostalgic, rockabilly, couture, fun, flirty, alternative, girly girl, punk, nouveau, antique costume jewelry, and more yet to be discovered. Each piece is unique because the artists use materials found in places like old buildings and demolition sites to create their treasures. Most often each piece will be one-of-kind. Angel Court is founded on our friendship which grew out of their mutual love of vintage and old world charm. Their friendship was sealed the afternoon they decided to go for lunch. On the drive they found what they consider a gold mine. Littering a demolition sight, of an old building, were several pieces of antique ceiling tin. They just had to have it and needless to say they never did make it to lunch. Outings like these are now the norm for Angel Court and a constant inspiration for their jewelry and art which reflects their love of the past. Check them out in our jewelry section. Beau Soleil With green products on the rise, Anne Salvatore Epstein, has appropriately timed the launch of her eco-friendly dress collection called Beau Soleil, named after the designer's favorite oyster. The company's focus is on sustainability, fair trade and labor, as well as organic raw materials with the end goal to offer consumers environmentally healthy clothing choices without sacrificing fashion. When Anne discovered she was pregnant, she and her husband morphed their "overly excessive" New York City lifestyle into one that is "Simple. Modern. Organic." They moved into a green building located in mid-town Manhattan, increased their trips to the green market, and made conscious everyday living decisions to do their part in saving the planet. This new mindset, coupled with Epstein's career experience at Marc Jacobs and IISLI, opened her eyes to how the manufacturing process impacts the environment. It was imperative for her to be kind to the planet and laborers when bringing her design vision to fruition. Epstein uses fabric made out of bamboo, a sustainable material, vegetable-dyed organic cottons and vintage, tencel, which is made from eucalyptus tress, as well as recycled leather trims. Anne currently resides in Manhattan with her husband, Jason, and her 9 month-old son, Grey Jameson. Check them out in our clothes and shoes and bags sections. Bluewick Candles Since that very first day in 1998, Bluewick has specialized in dazzlingly fresh fragrances fashioned from complex blends of natural ingredients, all captured in pure soy wax candles and luxurious body care products. The comforting atmosphere created when a Bluewick candle is lit and enjoyed is the carefully crafted handiwork of Art Hernandez, and it's also the quality that makes Bluewick an eternally popular commodity. Art discovered his passion for vibrant scents and, ultimately, his inspiration for Bluewick right in his own backyard. When he was younger, it was a tangerine tree behind his house that he recalls so vividly, "the biggest, most fragrant tangerines I've ever seen." The piquant scent that emanated from that fresh citrus as his mother sliced it into juicy wedges left his senses tingling. The memory stirs his emotions even today. Eco-centric Combining her love and passion for fashion, photography and the environment, Eco-centric founder and head-designer Laura Chambers decided to create a fashion forward line to stand out above the rest, made entirely from certified organic cotton. "I needed a new handbag but I was a hardcore vegetarian. I wanted something that was fashionable and invincible but not made from leather," Heather explains. "I didn't find what I was looking for, so I went to McGuckin's, (a favorite local hardware store) bought some tools and started my own personal sweatshop with me doing the sweating." After friends started asking for a bag just like hers, Heather knew she was on to something and English Retreads hit the road in 2001. Truck stops in the Boulder area supply Heather with the used inner tubes each of which probably has more than 60,000 miles on it before it gets reinvented. "Just think of all the places these tubes have been," says Heather. "Now it's your turn to add to their miles and adventures." Big wheels keep on turning out high-mileage fashion for the long haul. At English Retreads, the turn recycling into a bold fashion statement with unique handbags and accessories. Designed specifically for conscientious consumers and savvy fashionistas, each one-of-a-kind English Retreads product is handcrafted from reclaimed truck inner tubes. Our holiday and special occasion cards with simple sentiments and uplifting illustrations can be found in over 500 retailers worldwide. A growing brand, we attract buyers seeking modern eco-friendly paper goods that are hard to find. From the start, it's been local vendors and mom and pop stores that sustained her vision. As an example, Ms. Young has sourced sustainable mills to supply her paper. Her recycled paper is considered to be the first organic paper invented, made purely with post consumer waste. It's more expensive to manufacture our cards on recycled paper, but the superior benefits on the cards and environment are significant. It was rare to see a fashion company that was concerned with the social and environmental issues involved with producing a collection. It was just as rare to see an eco-fashion company that was designing a collection fit for sophisticated, fashion forward women. These convictions, coupled with her work experience at Catherine Malandrino, Chaiken and Jill Stuart, as well as her business and fashion degrees from Dominican University and F.I.T. laid the foundation for the creation of Loyale. Loyale's clothing is inspired by understated sophistication, alluring fit and sustainable fabrics for the fashionably conscious set. Taking an ecological stance, while creating frocks with beckoning silhouettes and charming details are Loyale's signature criterions. Check them out in our clothes section. Noon Solar Noon Solar is an environmentally conscious company behind a unique line of handbags with integrated solar panels to charge portable electronic devices such as cell phones, MP3 players, and PDAs. With this line of handbags, Noon Solar creatively confronts the important issue of our culture's dependence on non-renewable energy resources, and offers consumers a sustainable alternative. By integrating solar technology into handbags, it is Noon Solar's goal for consumers to become interested in renewable power and integrate it into daily life. Our handbags are more than a fashion statement, they are a personal statement about a commitment to sustainability, sensibility, and responsibility. Noon Solar grew out of our fine art practice, much of which explored ideas of alternative energy sources, including solar and wind power. Feeling powerless in our country's decision-making process during the run-up to the current Iraq war, we sought to find a way to bring power back to the individual. Our solution was literal. By taking advantage of state-of-the-art electronic technology and integrating flexible, lightweight solar panels into handbags, we created a portable and personal power, and Noon Solar was born. Sworn Virgins Itchy, scratchy and uncomfortable ... that's what most girls think of when they conjure up thoughts of eco-friendly clothing. But one company proves that suddenly ... it's comfortable to be green. The brainchild of partners Roshanne Aghevli and Alex Amini, Sworn Virgins makes good on its promise of looking good while feeling good. Each Sworn Virgins style is made of 100% biodegradable bamboo fibers that are spun into an ultra soft jersey material. "It started out with the idea of being committed to purity ... committed to taking care of our planet" says designer Aghevli. And in 2006 the duo decided to take their environmental plight to the racks of the nation's finest boutiques. They hit the ground running in search of a sustainable fabric ... a biodegradable, ultra-creamy fiber that would also allow them to utilize environmentally sound manufacturing techniques. They stumbled upon bamboo ... known for being biodegradable, naturally anti-bacterial and sweat proof. Unlike other "green" fabrics, bamboo is silky-soft with a natural drape that makes their subtle, sexy designs so flattering and comfortable. And don't think that they have forsaken trend in order to save the planet, because these do-gooders have style. The line boasts an array of current trends and classic styles available in an ever-changing palette of bright colors, neutral hues and feminine prints. Swinging skirts, bouncing baby dolls and plunging tanks abound along with fluid t-shirt dresses and leggings. All that ... and they don't have to be dry-cleaned. Sworn Virgins tops, tunics and dresses range from $80 to $220 and are available at top drawer boutiques around the country from Fred Segal to Big Drop. Check them out in our clothes section.
